A sushi bar with experience in the local restaurant industry is joining the Downtown Market.

Sushi Maki, a casual sushi bar, will serve sushi, maki rolls, sashimi and seaweed salad made on site, as well as mochi and Japanese soda.

It will also offer catering services for parties.

Sushi Maki will open in July in the market's indoor Market Hall.

Sushi Maki is co-owned by Shun Chen, Johnny Lin and Wen Wang. Lin and Wang will serve as the bar’s lead sushi chefs.

Chen is also the owner of the popular Japanese restaurant Fuji Yama in Grand Rapids.

Sushi Maki will be located near the market's fishmonger, Fish Lads, which the market said creates an opportunity for "potential collaborations between the two vendors.”

“The foot traffic and visibility of the Downtown Market made it a perfect location to branch out with our new restaurant,” Chen said. “We think there is a market for fresh sushi in downtown Grand Rapids.”
