Health system names president of hospitals
A pair of hospitals will be under new leadership this summer.
Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids said this week that Mary Kay VanDriel will be the new president of Spectrum Health Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals, after President Sam Daugherty’s retirement on June 30.
Daugherty announced his decision to step down from the leadership role earlier this spring.
As president of the Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals, VanDriel will assume typical responsibilities for a top executive in health care: strategic planning, budgeting and daily operations, said Marc Chircop, senior vice president of regional relationships, Spectrum Health.
“Speaking on behalf of the board for the Big Rapids, Reed City hospitals, I think they are very excited to have someone like her — her background and specifically, they were interested in her clinical background,” Chircop said. “Having that clinical background and her ability to work with staff, engage physicians and providers and decision making will be a tremendous asset.”
Health care background
Since 2007, VanDriel has served as president of Value Health Partners in Grand Rapids, an organization consisting of eight Michigan-based health care systems coordinating to improve community health.
Previously, VanDriel worked as director of the DeVos Children’s Hospital in 1986 and began managing a community health improvement budget in 1997, which is now known as the Spectrum Health Healthier Communities program.
VanDriel has been named a Nurse Executive fellow by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
VanDriel has a nursing background specializing in critical care and has an academic background in nursing, management and educational leadership.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in nursing from Grand Valley State University, as well as a master’s degree in management from Aquinas College and a doctorate in education leadership from Western Michigan University.
