A local bookseller is acquiring a bookstore on the east side of the state.

Schuler Books & Music said today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Nicola’s Books in Ann Arbor, an independent bookstore, at 2513 Jackson Ave.

Nicola’s Books is located inside a 9,800-square-foot space in the Westgate Shopping Center.

The store will continue to operate under the name Nicola’s Books.

Nicola Rooney, the former owner of Nicola’s Books, is retiring, and she will serve as a consultant during the transition.

Schuler Books & Music also operates stores in Grand Rapids, Lansing and Okemos.

"In good hands"

Schuler Books & Music will continue to provide the “great service and community programming that Nicola’s has been known for and that their loyal base of customers has so well supported for many years,” said Cecile Fehsenfeld, owner, Schuler Books & Music.

“This key location in southeast Michigan will complement our existing three locations throughout west and mid Michigan, while also adding an attractive geographic destination for national touring authors.”

Rooney said that joining the statewide chain of Schuler bookstores “ensures that the future of Nicola’s Books will be in good hands.”

“The familiar faces of our booksellers will be staying on, so customers should notice few changes,” Rooney said. “During discussions with Bill and Cecile, I have found that we have remarkably similar views on what is important about keeping a local community bookstore strong and lively. I am sure that both organizations will learn from each other and will evolve into a stronger group as a result.”
