A design firm has been named one of the “standouts and stunners” of a North American design competition for its work for a furniture maker.

Paper-based design

Plenty in Grand Rapids, a branding, graphic and interactive design firm, was named last month one of the "winning entries" of the 2014 U360 Design Competition for its “Haworth Collection,” designed for Haworth in Holland.

Plenty’s winning piece uses a sophisticated, feature-style presentation to showcase the Haworth Collection’s iconic pieces from the past, as well as its new work.

Now in its fifth year, the professionally reviewed competition was introduced by the paper company Appleton Coated in Combined Locks, Wis. to celebrate design, content and printing excellence and "all that paper makes possible."

Five creative professionals from the Appleton Coated Design Council evaluated more than 300 entries and selected the best examples of well-executed print.

“Paper is so important to the user experience,” said Gwen O’Brien, creative director, Plenty. “When we designed this piece, we wanted to create something that would feel rich and luxurious, signaling the premium quality of the collection right away.

“It was also important to choose a paper that could re-create the colors and textures of the actual furniture, and we were thrilled with the way these papers performed.”

Custom Printers in Grand Rapids printed the work, using Appleton paper grades.

All U360 Design Competition winners have been posted in an online gallery and in “U Made,” the printed showbook.
