A local brewery is rated the No. 1 craft brewery in a national ranking that features four other Michigan breweries.

Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids holds the top spot on The Daily Meal’s ranking of “The 50 Best Craft Breweries in America” posted last month.

Founders Brewing ranks ahead of several worthy breweries from across the nation, including Russian River Brewing Co. (No. 3), Three Floyds Brewing Co. (No. 10), Firestone Walker Brewing Co. (No. 11) and The Alchemist (No. 21).

Bell’s Brewery in Galesburg ranks No. 5, giving West Michigan two of the top five breweries in the national ranking.

Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton, Del. and Stone Brewing Co. in Escondido, Calif. round out the top five.

Other Michigan breweries

Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales in Dexter holds the No. 37 ranking.

Dark Horse Brewing Co. in Marshall — stars of the new History Channel show “Dark Horse Nation” — comes in at No. 41.

Short’s Brewing Co. in Bellaire ranks No. 48, a significant feat on a national list as the brewery only distributes in Michigan.

Top states

Michigan is well represented on the ranking, but California and Colorado shine the brightest.

California has 12 breweries on the ranking, with the San Diego area home to four of the breweries, and Colorado is represented by seven breweries.
