A local company did something a little bit different recently when it presented its employees with $100 gift certificates.

Automotive supplier Lacks Enterprises gave more than 300 employees gift certificates to the Downtown Market to be redeemed on Sunday, Sept. 7.

Employees and their families filled the Downtown Market between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to enjoy a day filled with local spending.

The gift totaled more than $30,000 for Downtown Market merchants.

Jim Green, executive HR director at Lacks, said the event was a fantastic success and he anticipates Lacks will hold a similar event for employees in the future.

“It was almost like having a Lacks picnic at the market,” Green said.

Lacks CEO Richard Lacks Jr. is a big fan of the market and is committed to supporting local entrepreneurs, which prompted his generous gift, according to officials at the Downtown Market.

“The Lacks family supports the Downtown Market,” Green said. “They think it is an important component of the continued growth of the downtown area and vital to the continued success of Grand Rapids and they want to see it succeed.”

Lacks has pledged to give a total of $100,000 to Downtown Market tenants over the next four years.

Green said Lacks is looking at achieving its total donation goal through providing revenue to the market and through marketing support for the vendors.

“We had some preliminary discussion with the vendors on what types of assistance would be of the most value to them from a marketing perspective and we are anxious to hear their feedback,” Green said.
