A third-party logistics and cold storage provider has earned spots on a pair of “Top 100” rankings by industry trade publications.

Columbian Logistics Network in Grand Rapids said last week that it has been recognized by Inbound Logistics and Food Logistics in their annual “Top 100” rankings.

Columbian is the only Michigan-based third-party logistics, or 3PL, and cold storage provider to make both rankings.

The logistics company offers warehousing and transportation services to the food and manufacturing industries in the Midwest and surrounding regions.

“We are proud to be recognized by these respected industry journals,” said John Zevalkink, CEO, Columbian Logistics Network. “It is a direct reflection of our commitment to service, safety and performance.”

The “Top 100” designees are selected through a process of analyzing questionnaire data, online research and personal interviews and are derived from a pool of hundreds of nationwide logistics service suppliers.

“The annual ‘Top 100’ lists are viewed as a valuable service selection resource for the combined 90,000 subscribers to these publications,” said Blair Thomas, director of customer care, Columbian Logistics Network.

This is the third year that Columbian has been named a top company by Food Logistics and the fourth year it earned the designation from Inbound Logistics.

“3PLs have always provided tactical, operational results, but their strategic input has also become increasingly important to outsourcers,” said Felecia Stratton, editor, Inbound Logistics. “3PLs that are consultative, proactive, take the lead in sharing best supply chain practices and help to drive enterprise business process improvement rank high in importance to our readers.”

Food Logistics noted that its top 3LP and cold storage ranking is growing, which it said is an indication of the increased expertise in food and beverage handling.

“Our growing list of 3PLs and cold storage providers indicates how important these two segments are to the food industry and the level of expertise and services required to support today’s growers and processors, shippers and grocery retailers,” said Lara L. Sowinski, editor-in-chief, Food Logistics. “Assuring a safe and secure global food supply chain is paramount.”

Sowinski added that reducing food waste, managing fuel and energy costs and responding to new demands related to omni-channel retailing are also important aspects for today’s 3PL and cold storage providers.
