Retailer pens food pantry cookbook
A retailer has authored a cookbook to help its food pantry partners and the people who depend on them.
Meijer is Grand Rapids said last week that it has created a 48-page cookbook called “Simply Cook.”
The cookbook features tips on kitchen basics, food storage, meal planning and food safety, as well as basic recipes for meals using common food pantry ingredients.
“Simply Cook” was created out of Meijer’s Simply Give hunger-relief program in response to a need for food nutrition education by Meijer’s food pantry partners.
“We believe it’s incredibly important to provide families with nutritious food, but we also wanted to educate them on how to prepare those foods into healthy meals once they get home,” said Shari Steinback, healthy living advisor and registered dietician, Meijer.
Meijer “healthy living advisors” and registered dietitians worked with food pantry partners to develop “Simply Cook.”
English and Spanish versions of the cookbook have been distributed to Meijer's food banks partners in the Midwest.
“As the challenge of fighting hunger continues in all of the communities we serve, it’s more important than ever to come together to help our neighbors make ends meet,” said Janet Emerson, EVP of retail operations, Meijer.
