Grand Rapids Griffins mark 20 seasons
The Grand Rapids Griffins have begun commemorating their 20th season.
The Grand Rapids Griffins, in the middle of their 19th season, will begin their 20th season as franchise this fall, or the 2015-2016 season.
The team has unveiled a 20-season commemorative logo as part of its celebration.
Other aspects of the season’s celebration will be announced this summer.
“We look forward to revealing our plans for this landmark year and inviting our fans to join in the festivities,” said Tim Gortsema, SVP of business operations, Grand Rapids Griffins. “It’s hard to believe that it’s been that long since our inaugural puck drop at Van Andel Arena on October 11, 1996. However, the tremendous support of West Michigan has helped carry our franchise since inception and will solidify our position as a top-notch entertainment option for the foreseeable future and the next-generation of Griffins fans.”
The Griffins sought input from Reebok for the design of the logo, which is primarily silver shield, with a large frozen numeral 20.
Silver has been the team’s secondary color since the its inception and was chosen due to its similarity to platinum, a traditional theme for 20th anniversaries.
A skyline of Grand Rapids runs across the top, while Griff, the team’s mascot, sits beneath, bookended by 1996 and 2016.
An outline of red traces the outside of the shield, showing their affiliation with the Detroit Red Reds, which began in 2002.
