There will be more than 25 ice sculptures on display throughout downtown Grand Rapids this week.

Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. is hosting the event, Valent Ice, which includes several activities.

This will be the second year of the event, which celebrates Michigan’s winter beauty by encouraging people to get outside.

On Friday, from noon to 7 p.m., downtown visitors will be able to get their first glimpse of the ice sculptures, which are being created by the West Michigan business Ice Sculptures.

That evening, there will be 80s-themed ice skating at Rosa Parks Circle with a live DJ, free hot chocolate and a costume contest with downtown prizes for the best dressed.

Saturday begins with family ice day, from noon to 3 p.m., and includes the reveal of downtown’s 3,000-pound ice sculpture at Rosa Parks Circle.

The public voted on the best idea for the 3,000-pound ice sculpture previously, and the winning idea will be revealed in sculpted form.

There will also be children’s activities, free hot chocolate and giveaways.

Saturday evening, Rosa Parks Circle will be getting into the Valentine’s Day spirit with Love is on the Ice. Skaters can get a professional Valentine’s Day photo in front of the 3,000-pound sculpture.

More details on the event are online.

Ice Sculptures is owned and operated by Randy Finch and Derek Maxfield, who have culinary training and more than 20 years experience in the ice-sculpting business.

Their ice sculptures have been featured on national television, recognized in industry media and included at movie premieres, celebrity galas, concerts and sporting events.

Their projects have been captured on Food Network’s primetime series “Ice Brigade,” which follows the team as they make interactive creations like pool tables, bowling lanes, grand pianos, carousels and putt-putt courses.
