Mercer names Grand Rapids leader

The global HR consulting company Mercer has named a new leader for a pair of practices in the West Michigan market.

Mercer said last month that it has named Mick Young the new office business leader for its Health and Benefits practices in Grand Rapids.

Young will report to Eric Basset, leader of Health and Benefits for the Central Market.

Mercer is a subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies, a global group of professional services companies.

The role

Mercer said Young will lead client service teams, capture new growth opportunities and expand the firm’s presence throughout West Michigan.

Young will work with a team out of the Grand Rapids office.

“Our group in Grand Rapids is responsible for consulting,” Young said. “My job is to growth Health and Benefits projects in conjunction with some of our relations managers in Detroit and Chicago, where we would bring resources in for Grand Rapids.”

The local Mercer Health and Benefits team is 10 people right now, Young said.

“My goal over the next three to five years is to at least triple in size,” he said.

Benefits background

Young has more than 20 years of experience working in the employee benefits field.

He most recently served as a regional worksite leader for Sun Life Financial since 2007.

Previously, he worked at Willis, a risk advisor and insurance brokerage firm, for two years, after spending 11 years with Marsh running a benefits practice.

“I tell people who have known me for years . . . it feels like a very comfortable pair of blue jeans,” said Young, referring to his feeling weeks after returning to the company. “It’s great. I’m very happy.”

After spending about eight years travelling across 12 states and interacting with brokers, Young said his prior experience will help in his new role, since he spent a lot of time understanding the deliverables of the brokerage firms.

“It is just an interesting perspective to go from consulting to the carrier and see the market differently,” Young said. “It gave a really good sense for exactly what we need to be doing to meet the needs in the market. Our role is to manage the total cost for health care, as opposed to just selling the benefits.”

Bassett, leader of Health and Benefits for the Central Market, said the company is pleased to welcome Young back to the company.

“We will count on his deep knowledge of employee benefits,” Bassett said.
