A bank is expanding its footprint in the state by rolling out 43 in-store branches with its retail partner this year.

Huntington Bank in Columbus, Ohio said today that it's opening the full-service branches within Meijer stores across West Michigan and the rest of the state.

The in-store branches will create about 250 jobs and bring the total number of Huntington employees in the state to 2,300 people.

Grand Rapids-based Meijer and Huntington Bank announced a 10-year in-store banking agreement in May 2012 to accommodate roughly 200 full-service branches across the state.

Huntington Bank opened 41 Meijer branches in 2014. The bank is now on pace to open 84 of the planned in-store branches by the end of this year.

Full-service branches

John Irwin, Grand Rapids-based president of Huntington’s West Michigan region, said the in-store branches are an important part of the bank’s strategy to give customers added convenience seven days a week.

“Huntington has consistently focused on growing in Michigan,” Irwin said. “That’s why we continue to increase our Michigan branch network, bringing with it more jobs. Our investment in these additional in-store branches further expands our statewide presence.”

The updated in-store design for the next wave of Meijer branches incorporates private meeting spaces and two sit-down offices for confidential customer discussions.

The in-store branches will operate seven days a week, with extended hours into the evening and weekends, and also incorporate 24-hour access ATMs.

The locations will offer a range of services and products: mortgages, consumer and business loans, deposit accounts and credit cards.

“Standout” leaders

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said Huntington’s continued commitment to job growth in Michigan has been important to the state’s economic comeback.

“Both Huntington and Meijer have been standout community leaders throughout Michigan, and it is exciting to see this great partnership expand,” Snyder said. “This expansion is another great example of our state’s momentum, strong economic climate and demonstrates that Michigan is an ideal place to invest and grow a business.”
