A national apparel chain with fly-fishing roots is moving into West Michigan.

Orvis in Sunderland, Vt. — a retailer of men’s and women’s apparel, fly-fishing gear, hunting gear and more — is moving into the Breton Village shopping center in Grand Rapids, according to Grand Rapids-based CWD Real Estate Investment today, the center's leasing and property manager.

Orvis also operates a store in Royal Oak.

The space

An interior build out of Orvis’ 4,800-square-foot space is expected to begin immediately, with Orvis opening the store this fall, said Scott Wierda, co-owner of Breton Village and managing partner at CWD.

Orvis has signed a lease to be located next to the recently announced West Elm store in the newest building at the center, at 1830 Breton Rd. SE.

Wierda said that the Orvis store will be its latest retail design prototype, and the retailer is excited to try out the design.

“Destination retailer”

Wierda said that Orvis brings “an entirely new dimension” to the growing “fashion and specialty district” at Breton Village.

“It’s truly an iconic destination retailer — people from West Michigan will travel to Chicago or the Detroit area just to shop there,” Wierda said. “We are realizing our goal by creating that kind of destination shopping district right here in Grand Rapids.”

Wierda added that he tries to “balance not only women’s fashion, but some of the things that might be interesting for men as well.”

Michigan “base”

“Orvis has a long-standing and strong customer base in Michigan,” said Jason Williams, real estate manager, Orvis Retail.

Williams said the retailer will now “be able to more directly share our love of the outdoor world with the Grand Rapids community” through its classes, conservation efforts and retail presence.
