An electrical firm that’s served the region for decades has been acquired by a furniture dealer.

The deal

Grand Rapids-based Custer, a Steelcase dealer, said last week that it has acquired C&S Electric Service in Grand Haven, a commercial and industrial electrical contractor, at 220 N. Ferry St.

Terms of the deal, which occurred last summer, were not disclosed.

The staff at C&S “has stayed on,” said Brad Laackman, a director at Custer and board member at C&S.

“We’re in a big hiring push right now,” he said. “We could take on about three or four more right now.”

C&S will not undergo a name change, because it is already such a trusted brand, Laackman said.

Electrical fit

“Custer realized how much work we do with electricians every year . . . in all of our divisions,” Laackman said. “We are constantly partnering with electricians, so that was the impetus for talking to C&S.”

Laackman said that Custer was attracted to C&S, because of the contractor’s shared vision for customer service, as well as C&S’s electrical expertise and experience within a wide range of projects, including manufacturing, commercial, industrial and retail.

Laackman added that C&S is focusing on developing and growing its three main revenue streams: existing clients; supporting Custer management; and new ventures.
