An investment banking firm has hired a woman with 20 years of experience performing and critiquing business valuation services to lead a new practice.

Charter Capital Partners in Grand Rapids, which specializes in buy, sell and capital raise transactions, said this month that it has named Christine Baker managing director of its business valuation practice.

Valuation practice

Charter Capital Partners has been providing merger and acquisition focused business appraisals for roughly 25 years and launched its business valuation practice to meet the needs of the firm’s growing client base, according to Kristin Sheline, marketing director at the firm.

“Christine has valuation expertise for an even wider range of purposes and is helping us increase the depth and breadth of our offering,” Sheline said.

Sheline said the firm's certified and accredited team now helps clients "meet business valuation goals" in planning, dispute resolution and compliance, in addition to M&A transactions.

Baker will lead the business valuation services team and work with John Kerschen, managing director at Charter Capital Partners.

“John Kerschen and I have discussed valuation needs of Charter clients for several decades,” Baker said. "As Charter has been enhancing its expertise in house, John began tactfully recruiting me to join the firm."

Baker added that Charter has been “increasingly approached to perform business valuation appraisals for clients” for a variety of reasons: estate and tax planning, ownership succession planning, purchase price allocations for acquisition accounting, share-based compensation, partners buying one another out and spouses going through a divorce.

Prior to joining Charter Capital Partners, Baker practiced in New York as a managing director of a business valuation and litigation assistance firm and served as a firm-wide leader in valuation services at an accounting and consulting firm in the Great Lakes region.

Baker is an accredited senior appraiser by the American Society of Appraisers and accredited in business valuation by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, or AICPA.

She's also served on a number of AICPA committees, such as the Business Valuation Committee and Forensic and Valuation Services Executive Committee.

Joining the firm

Kerschen said Baker brings an enhanced level of expertise and credentials to the practice and is a nationally recognized professional in her field.

“We could not be more pleased Christine has joined our team,” Kerschen said. “She is integral to accelerating the success of Charter and our clients.”

Baker said she is delighted to join the firm and looks forward to leveraging her experience in contributing to Charter Capital Partners' reputation of providing collaborative services.

Baker said the “credibility the Charter name brings to a business valuation is unmatched in the region,” and the firm has a “long track record of successfully executing hundreds of deals.”

“When John asked me to lead this growing practice, I knew it was a great opportunity to join a great firm,” Baker said.
