An experienced education administrator is the new leader of the $30-million Grand Rapids Community College Foundation.

GRCC said last week that it has named Kathryn Mullins its VP of College Advancement and executive director of its foundation.

Since the two roles go hand in hand, Mullins’ daily responsibilities include oversight of the GRCC Foundation, communications, marketing, public relations, grants and resource development.

“I am very excited to begin this important work and look forward to serving our students and our community in this new role,” Mullins said.

Education background

Most recently, Mullins served as executive deputy to the president and liaison to the board of trustees at GRCC. She has worked at GRCC for more than a decade.

Steven Ender, president of GRCC, said the role will tap Mullins’ proven leadership skills.

“She will be an invaluable resource to the foundation’s mission of equipping our students to meet the needs of the community and the world,” Ender said.

Previously, Mullins worked in K-12 administration for roughly 10 years before joining GRCC in 2004.

She has an academic background in leadership studies and community college leadership.

She earned an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree and M.B.A. from Baker College, before earning a doctorate in community college leadership from Ferris State University.

The foundation

The GRCC Foundation was established in 1964 with $12,000 in financial gifts and has grown over the years to more than $30 million in assets.

With a mission to secure and manage financial contributions to support and encourage student, employee and community learning, the GRCC Foundation provides student scholarships and faculty and staff professional development funding. The foundation also raises capital for building projects and campus improvements.

During the 2013-2014 academic year, the foundation had roughly 738 distinct donors and received more than $934,000 in total restricted and unrestricted financial gifts, according to the foundation annual report.

More than 650 students were allocated scholarships, with a cumulative amount of more than $570,000, while grants supporting professional development for GRCC faculty and staff reached more than $60,600.
