A sporting goods retailer specializing in hunting and fishing gear has its sights set on the West Michigan market.

Portage-based developer American Village Builders is almost ready to break ground on a space for a Field & Stream store at The Corner@Drake, its 40-acre development in Oshtemo Township, just west of Kalamazoo, at 5215 Century Ave., said Joe Gesmundo, principal, American Village Builders.

Coraopolis, Pa.-based Dick’s Sporting Goods launched its first Field & Stream store in 2013. The stores also sell camping and hiking gear.

“Dick’s Sporting Goods bought the name rights from the magazine Field & Stream to use their name as a retail store and then they started this concept,” Gesmundo said.

He added that the first Field & Stream store in Michigan opened in Troy this spring.

The 50,000-square-foot store would sit on about 5.5 acres of land and include about 246 parking spaces.

The project was presented to and approved by the Oshtemo Township Zoning Board on Tuesday. All that needs to happen is for the lease to be signed, Gesmundo said.

Gesmundo said the firm is “hoping to break ground a week from today,” with the store’s opening planned for next March 1.

American Village Builders will also serve as the project’s contractor.
