A national law firm with a strong Grand Rapids presence has expanded its reach and network into Texas.

Barnes & Thornburg said this month that former Gardere Wynne Sewell attorney Mark Bayer has joined the firm and will establish a new Dallas office.

Bayer will serve as the office’s managing partner. Additional attorneys will be hired in the coming months.

The office is temporarily being housed at 1717 McKinney Ave.

“The opening of our Dallas office gives us an immediate Texas presence and instant credibility with highly capable and respected attorneys,” said Bob Grand, managing partner, Barnes & Thornburg.

Strategic growth

Barnes & Thornburg said its entry into Dallas “represents a natural next step in the expansion of the firm’s national footprint.”

Since 2009, Barnes & Thornburg has opened offices in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Columbus, Ohio, bringing its total number of offices to 13.

Barnes & Thornburg opened its Grand Rapids office in 2003. The office consists of 44 attorneys and staff.

The firm said its offices are located in markets with some of the highest concentrations of Fortune 500 companies in the country, and it has focused specifically on growth in leading economic and employment centers.

Texas is the second most populous state in the country. Additionally, the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington economy ranks in the top 10 among metropolitan areas.

"National player"

According to Managing Partner Grand, by adding "high quality and diverse" attorneys in strategic markets, Barnes & Thornburg has evolved from a regional Indiana firm into a “major national player in the legal marketplace.”

“Texas is the latest example of where we see great opportunity,” Grand said. “This move allows us to compete and recruit across a wider geography, while more effectively serving existing clients with active presences and business interests in the Southwest.”

Barnes & Thornburg has more than 600 attorneys and other legal professionals who serve a wide range of industries.
