A university is planning the second phase of an expansion project at its recreation center.

The Grand Valley State University Board of Trustees approved last week the roughly $12.2-million phase that will add 33,500 square feet to the GVSU Recreation Center in Allendale, at 1 Campus Dr.

Phase II

The second phase is anticipated to begin this September, with a majority of the construction completed by next fall, according to the university website.

Phase two will add several amenities to the facility: three additional basketball courts, weight equipment, locker rooms and offices for staff.

Financing for phase two of the project will come from the Campus Development Fund.

Expansion project

Due to the continued growth at GVSU, the expansion project addresses increased demand for space at the Recreation Center.

The board approved a roughly $7.8-million expansion in early February to add roughly 16,900 square feet on the south end of the facility and make renovations to the 11,500-square-foot space used for cardio and weight exercises.

The overall project will comprise several other elements: a new main entrance and lobby; volleyball and multi-activity space; spin room; training space; additional cubbies for personal belongings; gender-neutral locker rooms; and renovations to exercise spaces.

GVSU is working with Integrated Architecture in Grand Rapids, Hastings+Chivetta in St. Louis and Erhardt Construction in Ada on the Recreation Center expansion.
