An outlet shopping destination is opening the doors to nearly 80 stores this weekend in Byron Center.

Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc. is officially opening the doors on the approximately $79 million Tanger Outlets Grand Rapids at 350 84th St. SW, Byron Center, at 10 a.m., July 31, with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony to kick off its grand-opening weekend.

The grand opening

Hosted by Steven B. Tanger, president and CEO of Tanger Outlets, the official ceremony also will include state and local officials, and Drew and Jonathan Scott from the television show “Property Brothers.”

Tanger Outlets Grand Rapids’ Art of Style and Savings festivities run July 31-Aug. 2 and include such events as personal styling sessions with a People StyleWatch fashion expert at the Celeb Stylist Studio, fireworks display, interactive displays at the Tanger Dream Cloud of Savings & Instagram Tech Lounge and special savings.

Shoppers participating in the grand opening will have a number of opportunities to win giveaways, including: a Dream Closet Makeover valued at roughly $5,000 from Closet and Room Solutions, with a $3,000 shopping spree; and an exclusive workshop with Drew and Jonathan Scott for design-on-a-budget advice. The stars of “Property Brothers”have invested nearly 15 years in the real estate industry and specialize in transforming properties for clients.

The outlet

The new shopping destination is located approximately 11 miles south of downtown Grand Rapids along 84th Street and U.S. 131 in Byron Township. Tanger Outlets Grand Rapids features more than 80 retail stores with brand names and designer outlet retailers such as Michael Kors, J. Crew Factory, White House|Black Market, Banana Republic Factory Store, Vera Bradley and Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store.

Tanger said the company is thrilled to be bringing its third Tanger Outlet center to Michigan.

“Grand Rapids is a dynamic market with so much to offer residents and visitors and we are proud to be adding a new world-class outlet shopping destination to the area,” said Tanger. “We enjoy nothing more than contributing to a region’s positive economic growth and delivering outstanding value to shoppers every day.”

Economic impact

At roughly 350,000 square feet, the Tanger Outlets Grand Rapids is anticipated to generate approximately $7.3 million in annual sales tax revenue and create more than 900 full-time and part-time retail management and sales jobs.

Construction broke ground on the more than $79 million project on Aug. 21, 2014, and generated approximately 300 construction positions during its development phase.

The company

Tanger Outlet Centers anticipates delivering four new centers during 2015. In addition to Grand Rapids, the company also is scheduled to open developments in Georgia, Connecticut and Mississippi. The new shopping destinations will increase the company’s total footprint by 10 percent with the addition of approximately 1.36 million square feet and represent roughly $381.8 million in investment, according to the company’s first quarter 2015 results.

The publicly traded company is headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina, and operates 46 outlet shopping centers in 24 states in the U.S. and Canada.
