Holland Home appoints new leader

An experienced health executive has assumed executive leadership as part of Holland Home’s planned succession transition.

Holland Home, a nonprofit provider of senior services headquartered at 2100 Raybrook Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, announced on Sept. 9 the appointment of Mina Breuker to serve as the new president and CEO of the continuing care retirement community.

The transition

Breuker was promoted from COO to president in November 2014 and began serving in her new role as of July 1, as part of Holland Home’s strategic succession planning process. She succeeds David Claus, who served as the nonprofit’s leader since 1991 and will remain on staff until 2018 as president emeritus. In this role, Claus will focus on strategic initiatives and fundraising opportunities.

“I am excited about Mina’s promotion and her future work with the organization. She will do an outstanding job,” said Claus. “I am confident that our leadership is in good hands and I will have the privilege of continuing to work with our organization, which I dearly love and cherish, for the next three years.”

Holland Home’s strategic succession planning process began in 2010 as Claus, the executive staff, and the board of directors developed a long-term visioning initiative to ensure future growth and a smooth transition of leadership.

During the strategic planning process, Holland Home revised the executive staff and board composition, and reorganized the continuing care retirement community’s long-term financial planning structure to ensure growth for the next 15 years.

The role

As president and CEO, Breuker will oversee the direction of all of Holland Home’s organizational divisions. The divisions include three senior living campuses, skilled nursing and rehabilitation divisions, a hospice care facility, and other community-based subsidiaries.

Breuker said the organization has an outstanding vision for the future and a mission that will guide it every step of the way.

“It is a privilege and pleasure to lead this organization,” said Breuker. “We provide excellent health care to more than 4,000 people each day throughout our entire organization, which encompasses 13 counties across western and northern Michigan. I promise to carry forward the legacy that David created. He has left Holland Home in terrific shape and for that we are very grateful.”

Her background

Breuker most recently served as COO of Holland Home prior to her appointment and has also held a number of administrative positions in the organization, including executive director of the Fulton and Raybrook campuses. Before joining the team at Holland Home, Breuker worked at Holland Hospital from 1978 until 1998 in nursing and hospital administration roles.

She is a registered nurse, having earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Grand Valley State University and a master’s degree in management from Aquinas College.

The organization

Holland Home was established in 1892 and has grown over the years to employ more than 1,250 individuals and provide services to more than 3,600 residents in West Michigan. The organization grew its revenue from roughly $21.7 million in 1995 to approximately $128 million in 2015, according to the press release.

The organization operates three senior living campuses throughout the Grand Rapids area: Breton Woods, 2772 Pfeiffer Woods Drive SE; Raybrook Campus, 2121 Raybrook SE; and Fulton Campus, 1450 East Fulton St. NE.

Holland Home also provides skilled nursing and rehabilitation services at Breton Rehabilitation and Living Centre, Fulton Manor, and Raybrook Manor; inpatient hospice care at Trillium Woods; and outpatient hospice services through Faith Hospice.
