Change Ups: Williams appointed to WMCAT top spot

West Michigan Center for Arts and Technology has appointed Daniel Williams its executive director. Williams has been involved with WMCAT for seven years as principal of UPrep and later as a volunteer board member. He was named Principal of the Year by Grand Rapids Public Schools for 2014-15 and led staff and students at UPrep in achieving a graduation rate of more than 90 percent each year.Williams replaces Kim Dabbs, who is moving to Germany with her family.


The Association of Fundraising Professionals West Michigan Chapter announced the 29th Annual National Philanthropy Day award recipients, who will be honored at a luncheon Nov. 18: Benjamin Franklin Award for Outstanding Fundraising Professional, Tom Monaghan; Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award, Diane Barton; Distinguished Philanthropist Award, Marc and Jeanne Schupan; Outstanding Corporation Award, Steelcase; Exemplary Foundation Award, Kalamazoo Community FoundationOutstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award, Aubrey Cohoon; and President’s Award, Mitten Brewing Co.

NALS of Michigan announced Kathleen R. Amirante and Ruth M. Schaub are the Michigan NALS 2015 Award of Excellence finalists. The finalists will be recognized and the award recipient will be announced at a Recognition Luncheon Oct. 10.


First National Bank of Michigan in Kalamazoo announced Joseph S. Calvaruso is a member of its board of directors.

Lake Michigan Credit Union announced the hiring of Peter Rahrig as a premier banker for LMCU’s Premier Banking division.


John Piontkowsky has joined C.D. Barnes Construction as an additional site manager. Prior to joining the C.D. Barnes team, Piontkowsky was a superintendent for a residential builder in McKinney, Texas.


Grand Rapids Community College and Western Michigan University have signed an agreement that provides GRCC students with a seamless path to WMU programs by mapping out which classes students need to take at GRCC to transfer to WMU for their third and fourth years.

Nancy Giardina, the vice provost for student success at Grand Valley State University, was named to her first three-year term to the executive board of the Michigan American Council on Education Women's Network, a professional development organization for women who work in higher education in Michigan. Her term will end in 2018.

Mary Sierawski has joined Grand Rapids Downtown Market in a new position as thehuman resources, social media and community engagement manager.


Ottawa County treasurer Bradley Slagh has been selected by fellow county treasurers in Michigan to serve as the president of the Michigan Association of County Treasurers through 2016.

Ottawa County congratulated Kristin Caron, probation specialist for Ottawa County 58th District Court Probation and Community Corrections, who was selected to receive the Outstanding Customer Service Award for the first quarter of 2015.

Kent County announced it has received Requests for Proposals from three organizations for its building at 82 Ionia Ave. NW: Ferris State University, Franklin Partners and The Embassy Group.


Northview Eye Care announced the renovation of a former Spectrum Health Urgent Care Center at 5378 Plainfield Ave. NE. The 5,000-square-foot building was renovated for a new office location for Dr. Russ Curtis.

Holland Hospital has added two new physicians to its medical staff. Matthew Hilton, D.O., Family Medicine, joins Lakeshore Health Partners — Family Medicine in Zeeland. John Swartz, D.O., Orthopedics, joins Shoreline Orthopaedics in Holland.


Bankers Life’s Grand Rapids office announced it raised $18,252.95 for the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Michigan Chapter through its Bankers Life’s Forget Me Not Days event to continue efforts to aid research, care and support for Alzheimer’s disease.

Doyle & Ogden Insurance Advisors has appointed Shannon Doyle-Heads its vice president of operations and has hired Sally Williams as a commercial lines customer service agent.

Lighthouse Group announced the additions of Ryan Quillan, benefits sales professional, and Scott David, regional vice president of Northern Michigan.
