The construction industry recognized excellence across the region this week at an annual awards event.

The Associated Builders and Contractors Western Michigan Chapter, or ABC/WMC, celebrated the best in the business Tuesday at its 2015 Excellence in Construction Awards.

About 300 attendees came from 410 chapter companies to recognize 69 construction projects, eight Safety Award of Excellence nominees and three Craft Professional of the Year finalists.

“What a great opportunity to honor and recognize ABC/WMC member companies for their outstanding project achievements,” ABC/WMC Board Chairman Brian Crissman said. “Our members take projects from the conceptual to the actual and demonstrate the highest standards of estimating, project management, supervision, skilled trades, safety and leadership.”

The Safety Award of Excellence was split this year between two winners: general contractor Pioneer Construction in Grand Rapids and trade contractor Thermal-Tec/Michigan in Cedar Springs.

The winner of the Craft Professional of the Year was Mike VanBemden, superintendent for Kent Companies in Grand Rapids.

VanBemden is now an eligible nominee for the ABC National Craft Professional of the Year, and if he’s selected as a national finalist, he’ll be honored at the 2016 ABC Workforce Development Conference in March in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
