West Michigan companies earn 'perfect' scores for LGBT equality
Four West Michigan employers have received top marks for LGBT workplace equality from an LGBT civil rights nonprofit.
Steelcase, Herman Miller, Kellogg and Whirlpool each have “perfect” ratings in the 2016 Corporate Equality Index, or CEI, by the Human Rights Campaign, or HRC, Foundation.
Herman Miller has scored 100 on the CEI since 2008, and Steelcase earned a perfect CEI score last year.
The perfect scores give each company the distinction of being a Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality.
Also in this year's CEI is Meijer, with a rating of 85, and Stryker, with an 80.
In Michigan, eight companies have a perfect 100. The average score for Michigan companies is 85.
The foundation ranked 851 companies nationwide, and 407 of them earned perfect scores, up from 366 last year.
Since 2012, there has been a 150-percent increase in companies who offer transgender workers at least one health care plan with transgender-inclusive coverage.
Gender identity is now part of non-discrimination policies at 75 percent of Fortune 500 companies, up from 3 percent in 2002.
The Corporate Equality Index is a national benchmarking tool for recording and reviewing LGBT corporate policies and practices in the workplace.
Ratings are determined through criteria falling under five categories: non-discrimination policies; employment benefits; organizational competency and accountability toward LGBT diversity and inclusion; public commitment to LGBT equality; and responsible citizenship.
