A Grand Rapids contractor has won a statewide award for excellence.

Grand Rapids-based Superior Asphalt won the 2015 Award of Excellence for Commercial Projects at the annual Asphalt Paving Awards, held since 1977 as a cooperative award between the Asphalt Pavement Association of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Superior Asphalt won the award for its construction of the Caledonia Community Schools Transportation Center parking lot. GMB Engineering, Pavement Consultants Inc. and Caledonia Community Schools also were recognized for the project.

More than 6,740 tons of asphalt was used during construction, which received high grades in appearance, texture, longitudinal joints, ride and approaches.

It’s the second asphalt award for Superior Asphalt, which won the Award of Excellence — Projects 2,500 to 20,000 Tons in 2011 for its reconstruction of Gateway and Walsh drives at Gerald R. Ford International Airport.
