Grand Rapids residents could use an assist when it comes to managing their credit.

Grand Rapids residents have an average credit score of 661.74, placing the city No. 1,583 out of 2,570 cities in terms of residents’ average credit score, according to a WalletHub ranking released today.

That puts Grand Rapids in the 38th percentile nationally. The city with the top average credit score is The Villages, Fla., with a score of 779.51.

Other Michigan scores

As a whole, Michigan did not score well. However, several Michigan cities place quite high on the ranking.

The highest-ranking Michigan community is Bloomfield Hills at No. 58, with an average score of 734, putting it in the 98th percentile.

Hudsonville also ranks well, coming in at No. 81, with an average credit score of 730.47.

Other West Michigan cities appear in the ranking, including Rockford (No. 270, 89th percentile, 715.02), Zeeland (No. 291, 89th percentile, 713.93), Grand Haven (No. 519, 80th percentile, 702), Holland (No. 1,016, 60th percentile, 682.41), Muskegon (No. 2,191, 15th percentile, 639.63) and Kalamazoo (No. 1,828, 29th percentile, 653.38).

Elsewhere in Michigan, Ann Arbor ranks high (No. 251, 90th percentile, 716.48), while Lansing (No. 2,158, 16th percentile, 641.31) and Detroit (No. 2,560, 1st percentile, 589.66) also rank poorly. Pontiac has the lowest national ranking, with an average credit score of 595.
