A Detroit-based law firm is opening a West Michigan branch.

McKeen & Associates, which focuses on medical malpractice, said today that it will open an office in the Kalamazoo area to capitalize on opportunities for growth.

This will be the firm's second office.

There are 16 attorneys at the firm, according to its website.

Raymond Steadmon has been hired as an associate attorney and will lead the new office.

He was raised in the Kalamazoo area and returns after working for several years in Chicago as a civil litigation attorney, specializing in wrongful death, products liability, medical and legal malpractice and other personal injury matters.

During his time in Chicago, he worked with McKeen & Associates on numerous matters.

Brian McKeen, the firm’s managing partner, said he’s “thrilled” to have someone with Steadmon’s experience and roots in the area to head up the expansion.

Steadmon earned his law degree from the Chicago-Kent College of Law and a B.A. in sociology and a B.S. in criminal justice from Ferris State University.

“I am thrilled to be a part of a team filled with fantastic, genuine people and to be back living and working in western Michigan,” Steadmon said.
