A statewide law firm is expanding into southwest Michigan via acquisition.

Foster Swift Collins & Smith said yesterday that it will acquire the St. Joseph-based law firm DeFrancesco, Dienes & Smith, effective Feb. 1.

The lakeshore firm will operate as a satellite office for Foster Swift.

Attorneys Frank DeFrancesco, Scott Dienes and Stephen Smith will continue to serve clients from their St. Joseph office, located at 728 Pleasant St.

Dienes will join Foster Swift’s administrative and municipal practice, while both DeFrancesco and Smith will be part of the firm’s finance, banking and bankruptcy practice.

Foster Swift Collins & Smith has 95 attorneys and offices in Grand Rapids, Holland, Lansing, Detroit, Farmington Hills and now St. Joseph.

Mike Sanders, president of Foster Swift, said the St. Joseph office will allow the firm to “better serve southwest Michigan clients.”

It will also help the firm increase its presence throughout the state.

"We are excited to have these talented attorneys join our team," Sanders said.
