Several West Michigan companies are considered to be among the “World’s Most Admired,” including one furniture maker that has appeared on the ranking for a decade.

Grand Rapids-based Steelcase, Benton Harbor’s Whirlpool and Kalamazoo-based Stryker appear on Fortune’s 2016 ranking of the “World’s Most Admired Companies.”

Steelcase has earned a spot on the ranking for 10 years and moved up three spots to No. 2 in the home equipment and furnishings category.

Appliance maker Whirlpool claimed the No. 1 spot in home equipment and furnishings, and Stryker, a maker of medical devices and equipment, moved up one spot to No. 5 in the medical products and equipment category.

The most-admired company overall is Apple, earning the distinction for the ninth straight year.

Selection process

About 1,500 companies were considered for inclusion in the ranking, which was then culled to the 15 largest companies in each international industry and 10 largest companies in each U.S. industry.

Surveys were then sent out to the 652 companies across 30 countries, asking executives to rate companies in their industries on nine criteria: innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment value, quality of products/services and global competitiveness.
