A local nursing school dean has been re-elected to serve on the board of a national nursing association.

Cynthia McCurren, dean of the Kirkhof College of Nursing at Grand Valley State University, has been elected to the board of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, or AACN, for a second term.

AACN represents more than 780 public and private four-year collegiate nursing programs.

Through education, research and governmental advocacy, Washington, D.C.-based AACN works to establish quality standards for nursing education.

McCurren joined GVSU in 2007.

She oversees the school’s nursing college, which offers bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctor of nursing practice degrees.

Previously, McCurren held a variety of teaching and leadership positions at the University of Louisville.

She also serves on the board of the Michigan Organization of Nursing Executives, as president of the Michigan Association of Colleges of Nursing and was an appointed member of the Michigan Task Force for Nursing Education/Michigan Nursing Education Council.
