A mergers and acquisitions firm in the region has established an interstate joint venture to offer more services to business owners “entering a period of transition.”

Zeeland-based Rua Associates and Fort Wayne, Indiana-based The Midland Group, a business advisory firm, said last week that they are partnering.

The joint venture will provide the firms’ services to a broader segment of the marketplace within a larger geographic area.

The formal partnership between Rua Associates and The Midland Group will allow for more sharing of services between the two firms, rather than creating a new single entity.

Scott Jousma, sales and marketing development representative at Rua Associates, indicated the joint venture allows the two organizations to combine their different types of services to offer a more comprehensive menu to clients.

“There are some synergies between the two organizations,” Jousma said. “We feel very positive about it — on both sides.”

The firms said they’ll be able to help with business transactions for companies of all sizes throughout Michigan and Indiana and will be conducting joint educational events this spring.

Gordon Bell, founder of The Midland Group, said the firm has had a relationship with Rua Associates for nearly a decade.

“Our goal is to help companies build and grow, ultimately increasingly their sell-side preparedness,” Bell said. “This joint venture enables us to better serve business owners who wish to increase value as they look to the future.”

Randy Rua, founder of Rua Associates, said The Midland Group and Rua Associates both have a long-standing tradition of helping owners navigate the process of buying or selling a business.

“Our partnership with The Midland Group allows us to offer a greater number of value-acceleration opportunities that will help our clients improve shareholder value faster,” Rua said.

Jousma said Rua Associates primarily serves the West Michigan market in the manufacturing, distribution and services industries, but it is in the process of looking to expand to the eastern part of the state, as well as Mt. Pleasant and Traverse City.

“With Midland Group based in northern Indiana, we can look at opportunity there,” Jousma said. “We are trying to grow it geographically and strategically.”

Since 2010, Rua Associates has worked with clients and advisors to develop custom strategies as business owners work through the selling or buying transaction process.

The Midland Group provides solutions and strategies in management, private equity and transactions for clients.
