A health system’s medical group and a minor league soccer club are now on the same team.

Spectrum Health Medical Group, or SHMG, said yesterday that it has been named the preferred provider of medical and athletic training services for the Grand Rapids Football Club, or GRFC.

Under the arrangement, SHMG’s Dr. Olusanjo Adeoye will be the lead team physician.

In addition, athletic trainers from SHMG orthopedics and sports medicine will be available for injury prevention, management and treatment and will ensure communication among players, doctors and others involved in the health care process.

Matt Roberts, GRFC founder, said the club’s players will be “in great hands.”

“The experience and expertise offered by Spectrum Health’s doctors and athletic trainers will help us elevate our game to a whole new level,” Roberts said.

GRFC kicks off its second season on April 15, with a game against Grand Valley State University.

SHMG sports medicine is also the preferred provider of medical services for the West Michigan Whitecaps and supplies athletic training and sports medicine services to the Grand Rapids Ballet, Davenport University and more than 20 area high schools.
