Thomas A. Magnifico

Keystone Pharmacy’s Thomas A. Magnifico has been inducted as a fellow with the American College of Apothecaries. Magnifico has more than 30 years experience as a pharmacist, working in a breadth of settings from health systems to retail and with a strong background in administration and management. His current focus is as a veterinary compounding specialist.The ACA was founded in 1940 to educate, mentor and train pharmacists.

The American Planning Association has selected Grand Rapids Downtown Market for its 2016 National Planning Excellence Award for Economic Planning & Development, for helping to revitalize the urban core of Grand Rapids and connect the community to West Michigan agriculture.

EDUCATION

Grand Rapids Community College's Lisa Freiburger, vice president for finance and administration, and Bill Pink, vice president and dean of the School of Workforce Development, were awarded The Aspen Institute’s Presidential Fellowship for Community College Excellence. They join the inaugural class of 40 Aspen Presidential Fellows.

Hope College Alumni Association will honor 1983 graduate Dr. Tim Laman and 1959 graduate Dr. Thomas Nowotny with Distinguished Alumni Awards at the April 30 Alumni Banquet. Laman is a field biologist and wildlife photojournalist who is a regular contributor to National Geographic. Nowotny retired from a career as a diplomat and educator.

Grand Valley State University math professor Matthew Boelkins, University of Michigan chemistry professor Brian Coppola, and Western Michigan University communications professor Sue Ellen Christian have received Distinguished Professor of the Year Awards from the Michigan Association of State Universities.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum received a $25,000 grant from PNC Foundation to bring children from 32 preschool classrooms to the museum throughout April and early May to see the Robot Zoo and participate in curriculum designed around the exhibit to develop active listening, literacy engagement and play to explore animals’ habitats.

Gov. Rick Snyder announced the appointment of Eric DeLong, Grand Rapids deputy city manager, to the new 21st Century Infrastructure Commission.

RedWater Restaurant Group announced its Reds at Thousand Oaks, 4100 Thousand Oaks Drive NE, is open. Reds relocated to a $2 million renovated space at Thousand Oaks Golf Club, a half-mile east of 5 Mile Road and East Beltline Avenue.

A 5,540-square-foot building at the southwest corner of M-104 and 150th St. in Spring Lake has been renovated as a self-service and automatic car wash called Spring Lake Car Wash.
