College names director of athletics
A woman with about 20 years of experience in college athletics is the new director of athletics at a local university.
Grand Valley State University said last week Keri Becker will begin serving in the role, effective July 18.
She will fill the position held by Tim Selgo, who’s retiring after 20 years of leadership in the athletic department.
Becker currently serves as GVSU’s associate athletic director and senior woman administrator for the university.
Becker will oversee sport supervision, as well as cross-campus collaborations, financial aid in relation to NCAA compliance, fundraising efforts and assisting with game operations.
“I look forward to taking on the challenges of the best Division II athletics program in the country and ensuring I lead in such a way that the coaches have the opportunity for success and the student-athletes continue to receive the best academic and athletic experience possible,” Becker said.
She will be GVSU’s sixth athletic director.
“I’m honored to be selected as the successor to the highly accomplished Tim Selgo,” Becker said. “I want to thank President Haas, Jim Bachmeier and the search committee for having the confidence in my experience and abilities, given the talented candidate pool.”
Jim Bachmeier, VP of finance and administration at GVSU, said Becker has worked closely with Selgo and has proven she’s dedicated to student-athletes and the university’s tradition of excellence in both athletics and the classroom.
“Finding the best candidate within our own ranks is another sign of the strength of our institution, athletic department and staff,” Bachmeier said.
Becker brings about five years of experience serving as GVSU’s associate athletic director and overseeing all aspects of various university sports: men’s and women’s swimming and diving; football; volleyball; softball; women’s golf; men’s and women’s tennis; women’s lacrosse; and the Laker cheerleading group.
Becker also serves as the administrative liaison for GVSU’s Student Athlete Council and as chair of the Boand & Rowe Endowment for Advancement of Women in Sport/Physical Activity Committee.
Since joining GVSU in 2011, Becker has been a tournament director for eight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, or GLIAC, Championships, three NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championship and served on a number of GLIAC committees.
Previously, Becker worked at Ferris State University for 15 years, serving as the head softball coach and in a number of roles: compliance coordinator; senior woman administrator; and Interim athletic director.
She helped lead FSU’s softball team to the Division II College World Series three times and was named GLIAC Coach of the Year three times.
She holds a B.A. in criminal justice from Saginaw Valley State University and an M.B.A. from FSU.
