After hosting dozens of football games, Fifth Third Ballpark is now set to host a minor league futbol match.

The home of the West Michigan Whitecaps will host a Grand Rapids FC, or GRFC, friendly match against Toronto’s Aurora United Football Club on Oct. 8.

"We have made it a point to work with the other minor league teams in West Michigan to try to grow the game of soccer and all of our brands,” GRFC President Matt Roberts said. “We have had a great relationship with the Grand Rapids Griffins and Grand Rapids Drive, and now we will work with the West Michigan Whitecaps to put on a great night of soccer for our supporters and fans that may be new to the sport.”

Tickets for the event will go on sale on July 1 at the ballpark ticket office or online.

“We are expecting a great crowd for Futbol at the Ballpark,” Fifth Third Ballpark Facility Events Manager Mike Klint said. “Our staff is excited to see professional soccer on our field, and Fifth Third Ballpark will make a great setting for the fans and players.”

GRFC began play last summer in the Great Lakes Premier League, playing home games at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids and averaging crowds of 4,509 fans, while accumulating a 3-3-2 record.

The team returns to Houseman Field this summer, this time as part of the National Premier Soccer League, or NPSL.

GRFC plays its first home game of 2016 on May 6 against the Ole SC.

GRFC’s full schedule is online.
