A restaurant that’s been serving southeast Grand Rapids for more than 45 years is closing its doors.

Great Lakes Shipping Co., located at 2455 Burton St. SE, will close on May 28.

Great Lakes Shipping Co. President Bert Irwin confirmed the restaurant’s last day in operation, as the building’s landlord, Grand Rapids-based CWD Real Estate Investment, will tear down the building to better fit the current configuration of Breton Village.

Irwin said he hoped the landlord would be able to find a new spot in Breton Village for the restaurant, but he found out last Tuesday there was no new space available.

“Our lease terminated on December 31, 2015, but (the) landlord . . . was gracious enough to give us through May to seek a new location,” Irwin wrote in an email to the Business Journal.

Irwin said there were several locations that would work for a move, but build out and transfer costs have proven to be more than the company can afford.

He said Great Lakes Shipping Co. is happy to sell the business to anyone who wants to purchase the restaurant as a whole and move it.
