A nonprofit will serve up barbecue dishes and whiskey-based cocktails on Saturday night with the help of restaurants and craft spirit makers as part of a new fundraising event.

Hospice of Michigan is hosting its inaugural Barley BBQ & Beats event at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids from 5-9 p.m.

The fundraiser will benefit Hospice’s open-access program, which provides care to all without regard to age, diagnosis and ability to pay.

The nonprofit has also booked hometown acts Domestic Problems, Mid-Life Crisis and Big Dudee Roo to provide the evening’s entertainment.

“West Michigan enjoys a thriving craft food and beverage industry, along with a love of community,” said Marcie Hillary, VP of community relations, Hospice of Michigan. “We look forward to creating a special merger between the two in what we hope will become an annual event in support of Hospice of Michigan.”

Barley BBQ & Beats is replacing Hospice of Michigan’s annual Walk & Remember event, which has been held in East Grand Rapids for the past 20 years.

The walk has raised more than $2.2 million to support the open-access program.

“We thank the many supporters and families who’ve made Walk & Remember a success over the years,” Hillary said.

Hospice of Michigan said Barley BBQ & Beats is inspired by the John Clay Memorial BBQ & Rib Cook-off, an annual May event held by the Clay family in support of the nonprofit. For the past 15 years, the Miller Welding team has transformed its corporate headquarters into a lunch spot for the Clay event.

Tickets to Saturday's event are $35 and can be purchased online.
