A local grocery store that’s been in business for more than 80 years is opening a second location in the area.

Kingma’s Market said today that it plans to open a 13,000-square-foot store in Ada Township to anchor the new Ada Village, on the southeast corner of Fulton Street and Ada Drive SE.

Kingma’s Market has been at its current Grand Rapids location, at 2225 Plainfield Ave. NE, since 1994.

Kingma’s expects to hire 25 to 30 employees for the Ada location.

The business plans to break ground on the store later this year and complete the location next year.

The project is part of the first phase of Ada Village’s redevelopment.

“Kingma’s Market is a perfect fit for our community,” Ada Township Supervisor George Haga said. “Kingma’s will bring jobs here and have a significant economic impact in our community. The market is a critically needed component to the redevelopment of our township and will serve as an anchor to the Ada expansion project in the future.”

Kingma’s Market Owner Alan Hartline said opening a second location in Ada is “a great opportunity to expand the brand and be part of a historic village that is undergoing an exciting transformation.”

“Ada offers us the perfect location to grow the Kingma’s Market brand,” Hartline said. “We are excited to join this transformational development.”

The Kingma’s Market in Ada will feature a butcher shop to provide locally produced products, including in-store sausage, jerky and bacon, as well as a seafood department with an oyster and sushi bar.

The grocery store will also feature a large selection of cheeses and more than 300 beers and 750 wines.
