An auto supplier based in metro Detroit is expanding into West Michigan by opening a new plant in the region.

Coastal Automotive of Rochester Hills said today that it has secured a 300,000-square-foot production space in Holland, at 900 Brooks Ave.

The plant is slated to begin operations next month.

In three years, the company expects the plant will support 150 new jobs.

Coastal Automotive said continued growth in the automotive industry has created the demand for expanded production.

The tier-one supplier makes several safety products, including a foam material, IMPAXX, which is used globally for safety applications in passenger and commercial vehicles and by NASCAR and the aerospace industry.

Clarence Martin, president of Coastal Automotive, said expanding into Holland was a “natural fit,” because the region has “significant expertise in manufacturing and the auto industry.”

He also noted the area’s “very talented workforce.”

“The West Michigan expansion is a great complement to our successful operations in Rochester Hills, and we see the two locations working together as the foundation of our plan for global growth,” Martin said.

Coastal Automotive’s expansion into West Michigan is the first step in a strategic, four-year global expansion initiative. The company plans production growth into Mexico, China and Europe.

Coastal’s global production will allow it to provide lightweight, passive safety products for "more drivers and passengers around the world."

Coastal Container, a sister company of Coastal Automotive, is also based in Holland.
