There’s a new assistant general manager for a trio of venues downtown.

Chris Machuta will serve in the role for SMG-managed Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place and DeVos Performance Hall, effective immediately.

Machuta is replacing Jim Watt, who's retiring.

Richard MacKeigan, SMG regional general manager for Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place and DeVos Performance Hall, called Machuta a “valuable asset” for SMG.

“His new position will allow us to continue to benefit from his efforts for some time to come,” MacKeigan said.

Machuta said he's "excited to take on this new position and continue to contribute to the success of the facilities."

Machuta's background

Machuta began his career with SMG Grand Rapids as an accounting manager in 1996.

He was promoted to director of finance for the facilities in late 1999, managing annual budgets and daily finances.

Beginning in 2008, Machuta took over primary booking responsibility for DeVos Performance Hall and has made a concerted effort to increase the number of events playing the theater, as well as focusing on growing diverse programming options.

Machuta is a Grand Rapids native and a graduate of Grand Valley State University.
