A senior living community in the region has concluded a $13-million renovation and expansion project.

Friendship Village said that it completed the project this spring at its 72-acre site in Kalamazoo, at 1400 N. Drake Rd.

The campus features independent living apartments and garden homes, assisted living and memory care, a health center with skilled nursing, a rehabilitation center and five acres of trails.

The renovation and expansion project updated the community’s décor and added a number of new elements to the campus: 20 new assisted living apartments; a wellness center, managed by a National Institute of Fitness representative who creates custom programs for residents; the rehabilitation center, which has 16 rooms for short-term illness and injury recovery; two lounges for visits with family and friends; a re-decorated health center; an executive chef; a pastry chef; and a liquor license for weekly happy hours.

“Fun is an essential part of life at Friendship Village,” said Maryl Petrie, director of marketing, Friendship Village. “Many seniors experience isolation, loneliness and stress living alone in their homes, which can have a negative impact on their physical and mental well-being.

“Our residents can be as private or as active as they please.”
