The Grand Rapids City Commission has unanimously appointed a new city attorney.

Anita Hitchcock has been named to the position.

She replaces Catherine Mish, who resigned from the position in April.

The city said salary negotiations will commence prior to Hitchcock’s start date being announced.

Hitchcock said she “loves the city and its growth” and is “very excited” about the future and serving in her new role.

Hitchcock's background

Hitchcock began her legal career with the city of Grand Rapids in 2002 as an assistant city attorney and was promoted to the position of director of criminal enforcement in 2015.

She was a staff attorney for Cooley Law School from 2009 through 2013, where she taught and supervised students in the Public Sector Law Clinic.

Hitchcock is a trustee of the Grand Rapids Bar Association and a past president of the Floyd Skinner Bar Association.

She has a long history of service to the community and received the Legacy Ball Award in 2011 for diligently working to promote diversity within the justice system and the Giants Floyd Skinner Award in 2013 for exemplary leadership and contributions to the greater Grand Rapids legal community.
