A farm in the region is laying off at least 300 employees after filing for bankruptcy.

Zelenka Farms expects to shut down its Grand Haven operation and lay off the employees on Sept. 9, according to a WARN notice filed last week with the Michigan Workforce Development Agency.

Employees have been notified of the pending layoff.

The company's Grand Haven farm, established in 2003, is located at 16127 Winans Ave., and at 1,745 acres, the operation is the company's largest farm, according to its website.

Texas-based Zelenka Farms filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in June and is looking for a buyer, according to Dow Jones Business News. Dow Jones reports the company has about $187.7 million in debt.

The company produces plants for big-box retailers and has six farms and 1,519 employees in Oregon, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Michigan and North Carolina.
