A local marketing firm has become a certified B Corp.

Highland Group in Grand Rapids earned the designation from B Lab, the nonprofit that certifies and supports B Corporations.

B Lab conducted a “rigorous evaluation” of Highland Group and determined that the firm meets the “comprehensive performance standards” in the categories of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency necessary to qualify for certification.

Several of the firm’s policies helped it earn B Corp certification: incentives to decrease the firm’s carbon footprint by subsidizing a portion of team member bus, walking and bicycling costs; and community service that supports trusteeship, local activism and access to resources.

Highland Group said it felt it was the right time to seek out the certification.

“We became a B Corp, because it was time to make a public declaration of our intention: to do the hard work of creating a fulfilling professional experience that allows team members to tackle big challenges, without sacrificing deeply personal living and active community involvement,” the firm said.

Highland Group joins a group certified B Corps in the Grand Rapids market: 616 Lofts; Bazzani Building Company; Brewery Vivant; Cascade Engineering; Essence Restaurant Group; and The Gluten Free Bar.

There are more than 1,785 certified B Corporations worldwide.
