A developer is taking over a golf course in town.

Grand Rapids-based Third Coast Development said it has entered into a purchase contract to buy The Highlands golf club in Grand Rapids, at 2715 Leonard St. NW.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Third Coast Development has no set plans for the site and will evaluate its opportunities prior to closing on the sale, according to a statement from the firm.

Golf and related events will continue throughout the year, according to a July newsletter sent out by the Grand Rapids Elks, which meets on the property.

The group alerts its members to the sale in the newsletter, explaining that the developer will convert the golf course into residential housing.

“It is an unfortunate reality that golf courses are difficult to make profitable, as we have experienced before,” Grand Rapids Elks Exalted Ruler Scott Smith says in the newsletter.

Third Coast Development, however, said the development possibilities for the course are still “in the air, and it’s not confirmed that housing is what’s going to come from this.”
