West Side restaurant and bar opens

A new West Side restaurant and bar is opening its doors today.

The Sovengard in Grand Rapids, at 443 Bridge St. NW, is set to open at 5 p.m.

The Scandinavian-themed operation features a beer garden and a menu with local ingredients.

The business is by former Brewery Vivant and Virtue Cider sales rep Rick Muschiana.

“We want to preserve some green space in an urban environment,” Muschiana told the Business Journal last year. “We want this to be a gathering place for the community, a place you can step away for a couple of hours and feel you’re in the garden.”

The kitchen is headed by Executive Chef Patrick Conrade and sous chefs Kate Kennedy and Devin Maloney.

The bar will feature beer, hard cider, liquor and wines from across the globe, with an added focus on the best of local offerings, Muschiana said.

The Sovengard’s opening currently only includes the inside portion of the restaurant, with the beer garden under construction and several weeks away from opening.

In July, the Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority approved a Building Reuse Incentive Program grant for the restaurant.
