A local union has ratified new four-year agreements with Meijer that affect more than 27,000 employees.

Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 951, or UFCW 951, in Grand Rapids voted last week to approve new contracts with Walker-based Meijer, which include wage increases, improved benefits and flexible contract language, according to the union.

The contracts were effective Aug. 21, with immediate wage increases.

UFCW 951 President John Cakmakci, who was the chief union negotiator for the talks, said the union surveyed membership last year to determine goals for the negotiations.

"The contracts we negotiated achieved their goals and were unanimously recommended by the members on the bargaining committees and soundly ratified by the membership," he said.

New contracts

The union ratified three contracts, which cover Meijer’s retail, distribution center and transportation and retail facilities maintenance operations.

The deal covers “significant” raises to starting wages and increases to top wages across the board, and it improves health benefits and reduces contributions for part-time workers.

The new contracts also contain several key elements:

  • Elimination of a 20-hour per week average requirement to receive paid time off
  • More paid time off for employees hired after Oct. 23, 2005
  • Shorter qualification time for paid holidays for workers hired on or after Sept. 14, 2003
  • More opportunities for full-time positions and promotions
  • Scheduling language strengthening full-time and part-time seniority
  • Retirement incentives

UFCW 951

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 951 represents about 32,000 workers across Michigan.

Employees at Meijer, Kroger, Rite Aid, JBS and others are represented by UFCW 951.
