A developer has broken ground on a $19-million apartment complex on the West Side.

Cherry Street Capital officially began work last week on the 61,300-square-foot 601 West complex.

The development covers six lots on Lexington and Seward avenues NW and Lake Michigan Drive NW.

601 West will consist of a five-story building and a three-story building.

The complex will feature 63 units of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and 8,500 square feet of ground-level retail.

An underground parking lot will provide spaces for residents, while guests and commercial customers will use a surface lot behind the buildings.

Grand Rapids-based First Companies is the contractor on the project.

The project is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2018.

“We’re excited to join a thriving neighborhood, and our hope is that this project will contribute to the city in a meaningful way,” said Chad Barton, principal, Cherry Street Capital. “This side of the river is rich in history, and we’re looking forward to bringing more residents and businesses who recognize and want to be part of it.”
