Craft spirits maker wins international Best in Show award
A local craft spirits maker has added another international Best in Show award to its collection.
Grand Rapids-based Long Road Distillers said yesterday that its aquavit has won Best in Show in the Unaged White Spirit category, as well as a Double Gold Medal at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition.
The Best in Show designation means Long Road’s spirit scored better than all other white spirits in the competition, including gins and vodkas.
The New York World Wine & Spirits Competition is one of the Triple Crown of Competitions, along with the San Francisco International Wine Competition and San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Long Road’s aquavit has also won best Aquavit honors at competitions in Denver, San Diego, Seattle and the SIP Awards.
The company has also won awards for its packaging and a variety of other spirits: vodka, gin, corn whisky, white rye whisky and rye whiskey.
“It's all about the people, ingredients and equipment," said Jon O'Connor, co-owner, Long Road Distillers. "Our team of distillers have fine-tuned our process and fully embody our no-shortcuts approach.
"Combine that with the finest ingredients West Michigan has to offer and top-of-the-line equipment from Vendome and Mueller, and we have the perfect recipe for achieving our goal of crafting world-class spirits right here in Grand Rapids."
Long Road Distillers was opened in 2015, at 537 Leonard St. NW.
Its spirits are currently available at more than 400 accounts in the state.
Each spirit is made with 100 percent locally grown grains and on site at the Grand Rapids distillery.
