A cheesesteak business downtown has closed its doors after being purchased.

Fat Johnny’s Cheesesteak Company in Grand Rapids, at 95 Monroe Center NW, is closed, with its windows blacked out and a sign on the door.

The sign says the company has been purchased by That Early Bird Café, which opened this spring at the former Kava House in Grand Rapids’ Eastown neighborhood, at 1445 Lake Dr. SE. The sign also thanks customers, as the company does in a post on its Facebook page.

“We have great news to share. We have been bought by a great local company,” the post says, without referencing That Early Bird. “We would like to thank all of you for the great years! Looking forward to sitting on the beach….See you at our next venture.”

The plans for the space have yet to be announced, and a representative for That Early Bird Café said it has no comment right now on its plans.

New Jersey transplant Dan Weiskopf opened Fat Johnny’s in 2013 at 122 S. Division Ave.

The business moved to Monroe Center in 2014.

Weiskopf also owned The Box Lunch Company.
